just scored some broken stuff, need help.

Post by stretch2011 »

I just scored 2 Samson servo 200 power amps and a fender dual 400 bass amp. All are broken. I'm thinking about fixing the power amps since they are in good condition.

The problem. I know nothing about power amps. I also havnt really fixed any thing except for a few of my builds.

Any help and guidance would be appreciated.

Here's a great forum for solid state stuff:

You'll see some of the same folks as here, but many more peeps focused on all types of solid state stuff.

Post pics and symptoms. I buy broken equipment and fix it often, it's actually been a decent moneymaker lately. We can probably help you work through the issues. Power amps are usually pretty easy to fix if you have the right tools.

If any of that broken stuff has any miniature circuitry in them besides what is likely blown output stages you might as well toss it out, as you'll not fix it!
If they have switching type power supply's you do not even have any SS type power transformers to harvest!

What, your gonna spend the time to pull 5 cent 1/2 or 1/4 watt resistors off of circuit boards, you must have tons of free winter cabin fever time on your hands?

Never know what you might find and need: ). The Dual 400 has all kinds of useful parts.

I disagree completely.

If the OP isn't interested in fixing these then I'll take them for the cost of shipping..

I said I wanted to fix them. Now if I can't and get pissed then after acouple more times of failing then I might get rid of them. Until then I just need to be pointed in the right direction. I'm trying to get some pictures posted of the amp with the top off.

Once you look inside these amps you will likely find these two things present themselves first off,1) the fuse will be blown, 2) you will likely find no burned up parts to help tip you off as to what's up with the amp, so resist the temptation to load another fuse in and power it up again!
Have a good couple of new xacto knife blades on hand for cutting circuit board traces to un- power sections of these maps and pin down what the under lieing issue may be!

Also those Samson power Amps only cost 200 bucks new so if I had to spend more than one hour getting one back up and running I would be nuts, but if you want to learn SS trouble shooting skills have at it !

Well I've looked inside first trying to locate a fuse. So far the o.my possible spot for it given the way the mains come In Would be under the pcb under and whole bunch of stuff. So naturally you have to take everything apart to check something as simple as a fuse. Don't have much time tonight so I'll update later.
