Reverb Transformer and matching tank

Post by Buddha's Guitar Tech »

Replacing a reverb tank in an early 80s Fender Twin Reverb (new Blackface, 135 watts ultralinear.)

The tank is missing.

I'm assuming a 4AB3C1B tank will work fine, but I'm wondering if there's any geekery surrounding the 'best' tank for this coupling tranny.

The transformer part number is 022921

Any ideas?

A Accutronics brand tank is the best sounding and to tweak any tank more I super glue down the coils to the iron plate core if they are loose, which most of them are to one degree or another! Just dribble in a medium type CA and use some accelerator if you have any on hand.

Tanks are cheap, and the brands sound different. Get two and compare. Accutronics are the standard, but Mod tanks have nicer fit and finish (like color coded rings on the RCA connectors and BLACK chassis, which we all know means quality).

A 9AB3C1B is a three spring version of that tank. I like it. Has a lot more boing! A dwell pot would be useful.

Thanks everyone.

I'm fixing this amp for a client, so I think it comes down to the question:
"Do you want to wade in reverb, or swim in it?"

2-spring or 3, 2-spring or 3, 2-spring or 3.... :D

A good working Fender has tons of it and I have never have wanted it deeper as you would get with a 3 spring as would most folks!

+1 on the coil stabilizing. I use a sliver of wood from a bamboo skewer wedged in between the coil form and the core.
