Jim kelly single channel layout ?

Post by Ang3lus »

the schematic is on his site

http://www.jimkelleyamplifiers.com/schem.htm

sounds like a great amp, very dumble like with distortion and very jtm45 clean when rolled down.

does anyone know if there's a good layout for this amp somewhere ?

He claims to be getting 60 watts RMS from a quartet of 6V6's. I wonder how he's doing that.

Is it just me, or does this sound exactly like he always sounds? I'm pretty sure at this point that there is no brand of amplifier that will make me care to listen to this guy.

For Real?

I've got to wonder how accurate the schematic is, posted on the site. Any ideas if there are many changes to the original?

Sounds like a great amp...

There's a missing resistor in the cathodyne. There should be a 1M5 in series with the 3M6 to ground to bias the cathodyne.

What do the two 1N914 diodes from grid to ground do?

They help to reduce blocking distortion, kind of in lieu of a grid stopper.
Normally you could use a diode and a zener back to back set so they come into play at around the tubes cut off input voltage say around 5v ish.

In this case jim used it at around 1.2V to add a little diode clipping at higher settings of the volume pot.

Thanks a lot for the info.

I find it very interesting what some designers come up with in guitar amps.

The first thing I noticed was the lack of grid resistors.

First thing I noticed was 176V across the 1st pot!

Here are a few shots of a Kelly Reverb that a friend of mine owns. He used it in a band I played in for many years.
Although this amp is not even close to "Amp Garage Tidy", it did kick but and sang like a bird as well.
Look at how close the power tubes are packed in there.

That's a mistake in the drawing. Should be a 10n coupling cap there.
