Post by Bombacaototal »

This is the amp JM did with PRS. Sounds great although I am not a big fan of the overdrive

Here is the demo video

The amp is 4x12AX7 with 4x6L6

I would assume it's a ODS like circuit but with a dumblator like buffer on the Loop. So V1=tonestack; V2=Overdrive; V3=d'lator loop; V4=PI

SIX THOUSAND Dollars.....for just the head.
One THOUSAND One Hundred for the 2x12 cab.
Who on Earth, or rather Why, would anybody spend that much money for a guitar amp.?

I agree, and to be fair it doesn't even sound that unique

The overdrive is yerrrrrk

But to be honest I am still curious about the circuit

I agree the OD sounded horrible to me.

I'm not a fan of his sound with the PRS guitar now either. Prefer the strat and the dumble/TR

Your way better off to watch the videos then shake your head and move on.

Agree on most of the above. I'd like to point out it's actually a single channel amp for $ 6-K apparently. Tolerable cleans, the OD sounds like a Hot Rod Deville to my ear...

Hey Andy -
I want to be clear, and fair.....i am not taking a cheap shot at Amp Builders. Not Doug Sewell or you or anybody else.
You guys have a right to do whatever you need to stay in business. You make more amps now than when you started.....OK, Fine.
But these Hugely Expensive and "Signature" amps.......how exactly do they differ from the Hundreds of amps that were made just before it, and the Hundreds of amps being made just after it.?
The idea that a 6K amp with a John Mayer badge on, must...Just Have To Be, something unique borders on the pathetic.
If we were to pry one of these thing open, would it not have many of the exact Same/Similar parts and RC circuits that we would find in a 1500-3000 dollar:
Soldano
Fuchs
/13
Carr
etc etc etc
My Apologies.
I have rambled...sorry, but this scenario seems to be past ridiculous.
I will say no more.

I don't entirely disagree. In this case I think this appears to be an opportunistic price grab using Mayer as collateral for a less than exciting sounding amp at a silly price. From the looks of the NAMM booth videos, people clearly wanted to see Mayer. Not sure if the amps or Mayer were the big draw, but the booth sure looked pretty full.

Years ago Paul actually said to me that "people will buy it because it has my name on it". Okay.. This is actually his third attempt at amps. Those original solid state amps, a second tube line (very short lived and I'm not sure even formally marketed) that was designed by a guy he hired from Fender). I saw them at NAMM one year and they disappeared and then the current Sewell line emerged.

Let's not forget the initial prices on the first of the new Sewell/PRS amps were also pretty lofty a few years ago. They soon lowered those original prices, then cloned them in China for the SE line. Again, most models seem underwhelming.

I honestly don't know how successful the amp line really is. I'm fairly sure Mayer (like many others) is a paid endorser.

Yup. If you do buy that amp, just set it to clean and use a pedal for overdrive! :D

Electro-Harmonix does a good one called the 'Crayon' for about $65. :)
