where are you guys getting your wire?

Post by davebolden44 »

was just ordering some supplies and I wanted to stock up on wire. i would like to get some different color options in some solid core wire 600v 18g??? not sure of the insulation pvc maybe? i got an express kit from RJ a while back and the wire he sent me was the best i ever worked with and would like some more of that if i can get it. i am a hobbyist not a business and dont really need to spend hundreds on a thousand foot roll. just wondering what you guys use and where to go?

It's always worth giving Steve at Apex Jr a shout:

http://www.apexjr.com/wire.html

He has a lot of inventory that's not listed. He's old school, just say what you want.

I prefer stranded, pre-tinned hookup wire like this:

Stays where you want, but not as fragile as solid, single strand stuff.

thanks i will try that. what i liked most about the solid wire i used was when you bent it into a shape it stayed that way. i have a bunch of stranded but it might be sucky. it doesnt hold its shape very well

You'll spend a lot of time looking for wire and you'll find out that Apex Jr. has the best price. Also, he'll sell in short lengths. Skip to the front of the line. +1 on what xtian says.

I have always gotten my wire from Hoffman Amplifiers parts catalog. He has solid and stranded and a good selection of options and you don't have to buy large spools.

I buy one of the Plexi Amp wiring kits from Valvestorm. The wire is very easy to work with.

+1 on Apex Jr. and rj. I use the Teflon insulated solid wire from Apex and the non-irradiated PVC from rj. I don't need anything else.

I like the wire that valvestorm SELLS for kits one plexi kit is enough wire for a few amps I usually get a plexi set and a 18wat set keeps shipping to about 6$ and it's a shitload of wire. I'd buy 100ft rolls if I could find it

And Steve at apex is great also

Any thoughts on shielded input cable. I have had some crummy stuff and some really good stuff. Most of what I have used has been from kits or reclaimed from old 70s fender master volume circuits I have removed. I purchased some a while back but I cant remember what exactly it was. I will probably order from apexjr. and I would like to get everything in one shot. I am ever learning the ins and outs of amp building and have no clue what specific cable to buy.

RG174 co-axial for inside the amp. It's small diameter, easy to route, sturdy enough to stand up to multiple re-work. Apex Jr. has it.

This eBay store has a lot of colors/sizes of wire. Great selection of silver-plated teflon jacketed wire in 18, 20 and 22 awg, which fills all wiring my needs.

If you search for the mil-spec numbers, you can get all the details such as jacket thickness, number of strands, voltage rating etc.

...and Apex Jr is awesome too :)
