How to pull apart a XLR connector?

Post by Mark »

In this case the XLR socket is part of a Studio Projects TB-1 microphone. The issue is audio output dropping down after a couple of minutes. I wanted to look at the contacts and see it the wiring was correctly soldered.

I would have thought it would have been a matter of loosening the brass screw and sliding the part holding the male pins back. I can feel it is looser after tightening the screw but the damned thing won't move.

Release set screw, yes, but push pin assembly outward, not inward.

The screw maybe reverse thread!

Thanks for your replies.

I've tried to move it in either direction and it won't budge. Looking at the pictures I thought it should move towards the pcb's. The trick here is not to destroy anything.

I'm hating these tiny wires. Why do it if you don't have to.

As I recall, the body of the connector is where the screw threads are, righty/tighty moves the screw into the body, and out of the outer shell hole. Then slide it out.

With some Switchcraft XLRs you actually run the screw in to make clearance for removal... Maybe not in this case. I can't tell.

The socket appears to move forward, but it was mighty hard to get it to move.
