Amp busted up in shipment

Post by M Fowler »

Not sure what this amp circuit is, built into Valve Jr looking chassis I think.

Owner asked if I could take a look at an amp that was damaged in shipment.

Everything was loose and most of the valve sockets lost their mounts.

Once I tightened everything and or replaced tube socket bolts, added retainer to EL84 I had a chance to look over the circuit.

Switchable output tubes either EL84 or 6V6 single ended. A 12AX7 tube.

The amp is so quiet I didn't even realize it was working when I fired it up.

Look at the way the filter caps are inserted into the circuit and look at the soldering joints. I works well so I left good enough alone.

The company I work for did a few production runs of amplifiers back in 2006-7.The underlying principle in the design was ruggedness. I put tubes on a separate tube mechanical section and ran flying leads to all tubes, pots, switches, etc., and did a 3/4" fir plywood enclosure for it. We literally had a few dropped onto concrete (oooops! was that me??) with the only damage being scarring on the covering tolex. We had shipping boxes made from double-thick corrugated and fitted foam corner holders/pads for the shipping box. Mostly this worked great.

However... We had to ship one back in for repairs, and in spite of all this, it was damaged in shipping. The bottom front lip of the wooden enclosure - 3/4" plywood, mind you, seven layers - had a triangular dent two inches deep. This was inside its shipping carton. Imagine trying to put a dent two inches deep into a piece of seven layer plywood, glued up into a roughly 1.5 by 2 by 2.5 foot cabinet . I couldn't think of any way that didn't involve machines. I decide that nothing can ever be absolutely safe if shipped. Ever.

To make the youtube links work, you need to remove the actual https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= part of it and just use the part after like I'm doing for yours above.
