Altec faceplate ebay find to Class D Amp

Post by M Fowler »

Altec faceplate ebay find to Class D Amp.

The Altec looks cool and was cheap so why not. Put on new fuse holder old one was broke.

Took a chassis I've had since 2008 a Hammond 17x8x3 with Bud bottom cover mated to the Altec front plate.

The Class D amp module is a Sure 600w mono into 4 ohm using a 48v 12.5A power supply bolted to the top of the chassis and amp module inside chassis.

Got some jacks on back to install as well as IEC jack.

Sure Electronics 1 X 600Watt Class D Audio Amplifier Board – TAS5630

Mean Well SE-600 48v 12.5A power supply.

Very cool! This is something I've been thinking of doing, to lower the cost of a mostly tube amp, just do all the gain in the preamp tubes and not need an expensive OT or power tubes. Is this just for general amplification use or are you thinking what I'm thinking :P

Phil, both as your suggesting plus just to put in my rack in my studio I'm slowly trying to put together.

I am also building preamps, reverb effects, a home build LA-2A opitcal compressor, etc. Bought tube mic pre-rack etc.

Slow process for me.

I have a big ass Altec 800 watt amp if anyone want it , it just needs all the electrolytic s replaced.
I think it weighs more than a SVT!

Cool idea Mark - I've used a lot of those MeanWell DC supplies and they are really handy...

The Altec takes me down a little memory lane journey from back when I was in college. Our PA amp was an Altec with a built in 6 channel mixer along with a couple of the "Voice of the Theater" cabs. We didn't even have monitors back then and only the vocals went through the PA... the rest of us were plenty loud anyway. We were also young enough to carry that stuff around with us.

Yeah I think the Altec and other old mixers etc. look cool.

Finished up the power amp today and it has some power for sure and I have it set to medium since I don't have a 2 ohm cab handy.

Running guitar into my tube preamp into Altec Class D power amp.

Interesting Mark, Having seen Eric Gales this week with a micro valved pre amp into class D power amp (DV mark eric Gales raw dog) I was knocked out by the sound.

Would be great if someone could give us a schematic/layout of some of our favourite amps but only the pre amp stages into a standardised class D power section.

Similar idea to this one... There is a guy at my church that has the amp his dad built for him way back in the 60's. It is a DIY Super Reverb Preamp into a Dynaco HiFi power amp. Both the preamp box and the Dynaco box are mounted into the same cabinet. The Dynaco looks to be entirely original and overall a really awesome sounding amp... except some hum and hiss due to the amp being untouched since the 60's. With your eyes closed it could pass for a vintage Blackface.

In my case the Altec came with a 25k volume pot and rotary on/off switch with matching knobs MXR style so decided to use both of those items.

Had to install new fuse holder because the old one was broke and I used a 120v LED jewel light.

In my search it looked like some would run 10kA volume pot and research showed some had used 100k pot with the Sure amp module I have.
So I figured I'd try the 25k volume pot and it so far seems good. The grounds are floating on the audio input of this amp module so I used UK Cliff jacks every where
and ground is floating. This amp module is -24vdc/+24vdc (48vdc) adjustable voltage trimmer on power supply board.

My next Altec front panel will be a 100w tube power amp rack mount just to say I built one plus it will be handy for all the preamps I want to build, all will be rack mount.

My little preamp box was built a few years ago and really is a good sounding preamp for being so basically ughly.
My attempt at a visio layout years ago showing my amp.

thanks Mark, that's perfect :D

It's a shame those power supplies are so big, I'm sure there are smaller modules one could use. Going to look into this.

I'm looking for smaller supplies I don't have to design myself, faster building time that way. :D
