AIMS Amp

Post by Smokebreak »

Thought I would document this since they seem to be a bit rare. It was hell figuring out how to get the amp out of the chassis.

Owner wants to drop a lil coin( on a new pair of KT88 or 6550(if these are toast). What do y'all like in the $100-$150 range?

I have repaired two AIMS amps. They’re pretty nice. Smashing big cleans. Put JJ kt88s in one.

I've seen 3 of these in the past few weeks with very differing construction, it seems. This one is a PC Board. I recently saw some gut shots where the board was an extremely cleanly laid out turret board setup. The heavily modified one I just picked up is true P2P Soldano SLO like preamp, with reverb...

What plate and screen voltages are you getting? I was having an issue biasing mine, as the screen are ~600V and the plates ~606V with the bias cold enough to keep the tubes from red plating. It's too cold, and this is causing really bad cutoff in my amp, so I just ordered a set of KT120's as they seem up for the duty, plus I've always wanted to try them. I think the problem, is my amp was supposed to put out 120Watts from a duo of 6550's, and when the amp was designed, they were using military grade tubes that were likely (conservatively) rated at 600V on the screen, which would handle that sort of operation with less issues. Yours is a different model than mine, the PT and OT appear to be the same, though.

Hey Aaron, yea I just saw your thread on the same amp from a few years ago. I got the Beaver caps too over here.

I just did the big caps and have 570VDC B+ with no tubes, and 540 with these RCA 6550s pulling about 40ma, which seems just about right!

Got it fired up and these 6550s seem to be hangin in, and sound good. PT hums pretty good.

Thanks for the info on the different construction! Pretty neat.
