1972 Traynor YBA-1A Mk2

Post by xtian »

Here is a Traynor YBA-1A Mk2 I just updated. Was all original, but several of the high wattage resistors were burned, had two-conductor power cord, old e-caps, all needed updating. So I decided to update it to Marshall 1987 specs, more or less. Running and sounding awesome, full 50 watts in to 8 ohms, with 570v plates, 535 screens, ~25mA per tube. Normal channel is very dark, and bright channel is very bright, but mixed together is perfect.

Nice work, I love the old Traynor amps. I have 2 Mark 3s and a Reverb Master that I'm going to restore.

There so darn easy to work on with that near pop off lid, makes you wonder why that has not been done since?

Way back, I worked on more than a few. Own a Mk2 still, though it needs some attention. Rarely warm it up, and the last time it was unusable.

Bit of history .. Long & McQuade's has been "go-to" place in Canada for musical gear since the '50s. Pete Traynor designed these. Coming up out the repairs & rentals maintenance benches he had real insights. Never glad to hear when someone says they've 'upgraded' to Marshall specs, as the YBA was it's own thing and some of the design changes were purely to make it more reliable. There's a few web sites dedicated to this story so I'll stop here rather than run on & on & on & on ...

Best .. Ian

I hear you, Ian! Yeah, I "upgraded" to Marshall specs, but with a mind toward reliability also. 5K6 grid stoppers, 1K 5W screen resistors, OT protection diodes.

Nice job... 😊

I wish my YBA had a hood like the later models. Not really much of an issue since I rebuilt it though. Great amps for sure.
