Rectangle panel hole punch set

Post by M Fowler »

For IEC

Not sure why I waited so long to buy a rectangle panel hole punch set other than the price of a set.

It was like cutting butter on a Hammond aluminum chassis, thicker still easier than all the crap I had to go through to cut a IEC hole.

The number of scratch builds I do the cost is nothing.

Keep the punch parts and screws well lubed.

Dry or slightly rusty surfaces, particularly on the screw threads can make them almost unusable. As me know I know this. :D

Mark,

Care to share the source/price? I've considered getting one for IEC holes a few times but lost interest after seeing prices. I don't build a lot but every time I start cutting an IEC hole I wish I'd spent the $$

Interested in price.

When I need a hole such as a transformer cut out I drill the corners and drop in my router.

Yeah, I use a jig saw. Ain't pretty, but the edges get covered by the transformer.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

An 80$ router will cut through steel like butter. Lot quicker and less blisters than sawing :D

I've cut a lot of IEC holes and transformer holes and decided I wanted an expensive IEC punch.

Mine is way too large I didn't realize that when I bought it for $400., live and learn.
So I have to use it backwards to keep the large round die on the outside with the rectangle cutter on the shallow chassis inside.
Worked great on a 3" chassis.

$400

That reminds me why I've never caved and bought one.

Just found this...

Need to measure the IEC plugs I have but looks like it'll work.

Also just found this...

https://www.auberins.com/index.php?main ... cts_id=511

Size is about perfect but the draw stud is for a hydraulic driver.

That's the physical size I wanted but had hard time finding it. That one is 28mm x 21mm

My unit is 29.0mm x 19.1mm Greenlee 60031 (1.14" x .750")

I've always used a Dremel tool "cut off wheel". Just takes a few minutes and I typically only need two wheels sometimes three if I accidently break a wheel.

Only $5 for 36 wheels and maybe 5 minutes of work? And as the wheel grinds down and becomes smaller, you can use it to make the cut out hole accommodate the shape of the IEC plug. You will need to wear protective glasses.

I've done the dremel tool cutout.

The drill multiple small holes trick.

The large hole saber saw trick.

Large holes nibbler trick.

The wish the fricking hole was done trick.

Now I drill a hole insert punch and I'm done.

What? Never drilled the 3/4" hole (in almost the intended location) and finished enlarging it with a hacksaw blade (wrapped in a rag) and double cut file? You're really missing out on best use of your time, Mark.
