Interesting Burman Project Incoming.

Post by CraigGa »

I'm sure we've all been there, seeing something on Ebay and buying it without thinking it through properly but...

I just bought an as new Burman Pro 502 chassis but it's no ordinary Burman chassis.

For those that don't know, Burman hand made amps in Newcastle England in the 70's and 80s, I have a Pro 502 combo that I bought new in 1978 which I recently restored with the help of this forum.

Anyway the company went under some time in the mid 80's but they planned a relaunch (I think by Greg Burman's son) in the 2000's and this chassis is one built for the relaunch that never happened!

I can see a few differences between the two but I'll know more when it arrives here.
One thing for sure is that it has EL34's in place of the original's KT77, is there much difference in operation between them or is it just rebiasing? most of the Burmans I see on Ebay have had the KT77s replaced with EL34s

Yes EL34s are plenty close enough to work for kt77s but they should be biased a little cooler since a 34 is rated at 3 watts less, 25 vs 28.

Thanks Steve.
At £109 for a pair of KT77s it might stay an EL34 amp but it's good to know they're pretty much a drop in.

Thanks, it's probably 20 years old but looks brand new.

I'll post back when I've powered it up.

only thing i'm not really a fan of is the tube sockets but besides that looks killer and easy to work on! i dig the little turret boards for the transformers; makes for quick understanding of what is what

I have a 100 watt Burman that came with KT77's, but the power transformer went out, and I wondered if anyone knew if a Partridge PT is available anywhere or it has to be rewound?

I seem to remember that some of these have been repaired with transformers designed for Hiwatts, I don't know the details though sorry.
