full feature low watt amp

Post by rutledj »

I'm interested in building a full featured low wat amp. By full featured, I mean one that offers gain, bass, mid, treble controls, master volume, and possibly reverb, all at a 5 watt level. Are there any schematics for something like that available?

There is one (or two) ongoing project(s) related to the G5 amp, from the Project G5 website, that seem to meet your requirements.

I do not know exactly the state of the project, which is expected to be available as a kit from Tube Town (Deutschland) but there is an english section where you should be able to ask about that.

Why not build a higher powered amp with power scaling? Then you have one amp that covers at home/studio and gig volumes.

5W is still pretty loud :)

While there could be some overriding constraints with respect to the voltage nodes, I suggest that you build whatever preamp section floats your boat and mate it with a low watt power amp. A good candidate for a low power power tube is a 6SN7. I realize this is a triode and will, by it's nature, sound different, but it can handle high plate voltage (up to 450VDC) like some of the big bottle pentode or beam tetrode power tubes. Other candidates for power tubes include ECC88 and pair of EL95 (a true pentode.) All of these will get you into the 5W range or less. The problems you'll likely need to solve for the 6SN7 and ECC88 are related to what sort of PI works best for a pair of triodes, including whether you are willing to go with a self-split circuit.

I built the SoLow Watt with ECL84's and it was maybe about 3-4watts push/pull http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... ight=ecl84

Some other draft ideas here: https://el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=12526.0

This one (the Minimalist) is about 7 watts and has an active FX loop also. I play it weekly and like it alot. http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... st#p386673

Here is a sound clip using the Minimalist https://soundclick.com/r/s8kg6h

Here is another idea using 6BM8 tubes that I have not built. http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... st#p394882

And some more 6BM8 Dumblish inspired ideas ............... https://el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=28361.0
