Resistors for the rest of us

Post by johnnyreece »

Good afternoon!

It's getting about that time for me to replenish my supply of resistors. Luckily, I do not have golden ears, nor does anyone I play with. That leaves my options a little more open. Does anyone have suggestions for reasonably priced resistors that have decent lead size and "look" the part? My previous supplier now ships teeny little resistors with thin, easily breakable leads. I don't mind digging through Mouser and DigiKey, but if someone has a proven alternative, I wouldn't mind at all!

Thanks, guys!

I've been using KOA Speer MF from Mouser, 100 or 50 PPM, e.g. https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/KO ... rsdQ%3D%3D They seem to have gotten pricy in the last year.

For small quantities (<100) tubesandmore.com (cedist.com) is great for carbon film: https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/r ... -tolerance

A little concerning that the Xicon CF resistors I have been getting for years just went from 100 to 5000 minimum order

That said my next order I would probably buy these @ $6.40 per 100

The Vishay Drailect PRO series are good. The two watt have to "size of older 1/2 watt stuff. They have a nice look. I am going to be using them throughout my marshall build.

Just be aware, damn near everything is between 2.5 to 2.75 length end to end.

These look like some reasonable solutions. Thanks for chiming in!

I can't seem to find any info on these. Do you have a link?

I have to admit, I've not heard of Royalohm before. According to Mouser, those have THICK leads! Can you confirm that?

I'm sure mouser has them too.

The picture shows them brown but they have more of that piher carbon film color.

Remember, these are two watt metal film, so good for low noise.

Unfortunately, they still did not have leads long enough to span my 2204 meteo board.

From what I've read these are not as sterile sounding as other metal film. Whatever that's worth.

Here are my usual resistor types.

From left to right: Vishay PR02, xicon 1w carbon film, royal ohm 1w carbon film, yageo FMP 3w metal film, vishay cmf60 (not to be confused with ccf60 which have shorter leads)

My royal ohm resistors are from tayda, might be different than something from a more serious supplier like mouser. I have never had a problem with any of them. Lately, I have been using the PR02 for plates mosta the time, xicons for everything else, and the longer ones only if I need the length for a p2p build or widely spaced eyelets.

If you prefer CF, there is this series from KOA Speer: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/KO ... CrjQ%3D%3D

I'm gonna get some of these and try them on the plates of my marshall after I try the PR0 resistors.

Thanks so much for this! You know, they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Data sheets are great, but sometimes just seeing things side-by-side says a lot.

I did see those. The price is definitely right, but I prefer the length of the MF you posted earlier. My lack of golden ear allows me to use CF or MF, so that's not much of an issue to me.

I really do appreciate all the feedback!

I have not used Royal Ohm yet. I found these after realizing the Xicons I normally use are no longer available for hobby level quantities
The specs are what matters and these meet the same specs as the ones I previously used
1Watt, 500V, 5% Tol and affordable

Note the KOA/Speer ones are ~47mm (< 2") long, per the datasheet.

The Xicon (Tyco) 1W carbon films are inexpensive and work well, are only a bit larger than the old 1/2 watts, and are longer that the new 1/2 watts (~60mm). They are also available in a wide range of values. This latter is becoming more of an issue with through-hole parts. :(

Is there any place to buy xicon without having to order 1000 of them?
