Can someone tell me this difference - 5E3

Post by Magnatron »

Can someone tell me what this does between the Hoffman design and the original schematic for the 5E3. Is it necessary or helpful to have the circuit change?

Screen resistors serve as current limiters, and help prevent burning up your tubes. These have little effect on perceived performance, and are a good, modern update to classic designs.

..affecting the tone and slightly compression

Can you elaborate on that? I plan on using this amp as a harp amp, so nice non-flubby bottom with early breakup at mid-volume settings are the target.

higher value of g2 resistance but also resistance coming from Ub+ line (is added to those g2) will give you compression and feeling , more resistance bigger compression, you need to experiment with the values.
original schematic without resistors is not good from upper mentioned reasons

470R is the usual Fender value, but anywhere from 100R - 2k is pretty common.

Needing them at in terms of a push pull class A amp can depend on your plate voltage.

Once you get close to 300 on the plates it’s good to have a 100 ohm resistor on each off of the B+ feed to them.
You don’t want the screens sitting at the same voltage as the plates .

99% of the time when a power tube shorts out and blows your fuse it’s because the screen was over taxed and literally opened up and one end of that broken winding shorted to another.
