Swamp Thing Amp

Post by M Fowler »

Since I am snowed in I decided to start on a single ended amp. I had order some surplus swamp thing trannies so I got started.

This is an 8 ohm OT. I need two .68u caps for the board yet and start on my filter caps next.

Looking good!
That chassis looks huge. I am not used to having that much room with which to work in. Is it about 5 watts or so?
What are the specs on Swamp Thing trannies?

mcrracer,

I had two of these chassis sitting around. There Hammond steel 16x8x2 so yes they are larger than what I would normally have used but I have a lot of empty head cabs sitting around so I started on a Route 666 with one and this amp for the other.

The trannies are on clearance at MOJO without any specs but there is a link to Ax84 guy with pictures of his build. They note the tranny is similiar to a champ with 8 ohm. The PT had not info. I make a schematic for the PT and OT from pictures of a build on the net and then got started. I plan to measure the secondaries soon.

I wish I new how to use visio better so I could make a layout of this schematic because it is kicking my arse right now. Had to resharpen my pencil twice now drawing.

Where is BnWitt when you need him, the layout king.

How do you like the triode/pentode switch?

What does it do tonally or sonically?

Ooops, I guess you probably don't have it going yet.

No I am still working on it. Got some more done tonight. Should be done soon. It is a maze of wires due to poor layout planning, oh well live and learn. Also, I don't think the board layout was the best. I should have waited and designed that myself.

Very nice work. Working in a larger chassis must make things easier. I guess I have to graduate up. I too put this amp on the short list for this Spring. I look forward to hearing yours. Good job! More pix if you can...makes me feel as if I was there.

Mark,
What is the turret board material made from?

I can't wait to hear that thing!

I would guess garolite, I bought 4 boards from turretboards.com to have on hand. I got the way too small turrets though. Next time I will get larger stock and double turrets.

These small boards have been good for capacitor mounting though. I have got to start using can caps in some of my builds.

Hi Mark,

I'd really be interested to find out what kind of voltages you are getting out of that PT?

A guy can't go wrong for the price if the voltage is there....

Thanks,

John

I don't know how you guys use visio so well, my first attempt is bad.

I also need more shape files for the PT/OT holes and things.
