Is it a good rule of thumb to use log pots in volume controls, while in tone/bias/precence, lin will work fine?

Yes.

Vol pots should be audio taper. You want to have a finer adjustment at low volumes.

For tone and presence pots, it's really up to you.
There's no advantage of having audio taper on bias pots.

Actually, I'd go as far as to say that it is a severe disadvantage to have an audio taper pot for a bias supply. If you're near the end of the adjustement range, you could easily get to a place where your voltage couldn't be precisely controlled.

The best bias pots are durable as all get out, preferably multi turn for precision, or at least locking so that they stay where you set 'em. Granted, I use 1 turn pots for bias on occasion, but if money was no object I'd be using RV2 or some other sealed style locking clarostats or high-wattage multi-turn jobbers.

I have an old fender where the Reverb comes up too fast. I never thought about it, but it's a linear pot, soon to be replaced.
