Cap value, how acurate are they?

Post by Tdale »

I got some 4,7 uF caps for the cathode bypass today. I measured them, and they measure about 3,2 uF... Is that normal, or are the caps of bad quality? Or could it be my multimeter that is bad?

But then, maybe 4,7 is to little anyway, I see some of you use higher values and different values on different tubes...?

Those probably have a 20% tolerance, so you're just under the 3.3uF lower limit.

Why guess?

I got one of these. If you don't, you should! I mean really should!

(Capacitors must be non-polarized)

So it can't do electrolytics?

Yup, I use a Fluke 87 for those guys. But notice too that it's upper cutoff is 1 micro farad. That's for the little guys. My Fluke is hopelessly unreliable with smaller capacitance. It'll tell me if a 47 mfd is close or not.

If you're looking for a 220pf cap out of the parts bin, this is the only $100 tool in existence that will tell you that's what you got.

When making resonant tanks (something we don't do a lot of here on the Amp garage :o)) there is no substitute.

This is a nice tool. No personal connection with AADE at all. YMMV
