Yeah most people don't know that the majority of farmland that isn't controlled by corporations is owned by widows with kids that can't afford not to sell it when the time comes, or can't agree to keep it with the siblings that have moved to the city and have no interest in struggling like their parents did. Incurred debt and inheritance tax make it nearly impossible. The only ag people I know taking over at a young age work full time in something else and operate at a net loss but do it because they love it and consider it a "hobby" not a livelihood.
Security is more important than freedom to many and the gov is more than happy to let them think they're providing it. The scary part is that nothing is "off topic" when it comes to a corrupt government overstepping it's bounds, it's all very much related.

Heard somewhere, a guy took Mcdonalds food, left it on a shelf, for YEARS< and it DID`T ROT!! Can`t verify it, but i don`t doubt it one bit, they ARE more than likely trying to kil us, i think they call it population control, you NEVER herad that much @ cancer/heart disease til the fast food chains cranked up!John_P_WI wrote:I'll tell ya ER, the one thing that scares me more than anything is the food supply - the amount of available and the safety of. I'm a voracious gardener and eater of my garden produce. Mostly "heirloom" or open pollinated varieties that I can save seed from year to year. All is good but with winters so long here in WI I would starve the other 9 mo of the year if I had to depend on my own stuff. Not to be an alarmist, but we all should have some self sufficiency if possible. Sorry for going so far off OP topic. I just wish things were more simple and hope things become "better".

Actually, the power company very likely has a much better security system than the American government has in place. Most places seem to have better security than what the government has put in place.Structo wrote:Yeah they hung a smart meter on my house a couple years ago.
I wrote to the power company in an email expressing my concerns over the security and vulnerability of the system.
I said, some kid in Russia is going to have a ball with this.
A hacker could shut down a whole grid or sabotage it with a worm.
An engineer actually responded to my email by calling me on the phone, which I thought interesting.
He tried to explain how much better they can manage the power with these meters.
I asked about security and he claimed they had all these firewalls, blah, blah, blah.
I told him, look if a kid from Ukraine can hack into the Pentagon computers, do you really think the power grid would be much of a challenge?
I said yeah right, you guys will throttle the power during peak use hours and also charge more for higher use during those periods.
I got him exasperated several times during our conversation.
I told him he could not convince me that anything good for the consumer will come from this.
Another instance of the government controlling our lives more and more.
When's the last time you read an article on your power company getting hacked?

I beg to differ...................DocRocz wrote: Actually, the power company very likely has a much better security system than the American government has in place. Most places seem to have better security than what the government has put in place.

Security comes down to the almighty dollar. The most secure are the ones that have the most to lose. Companies like Google or Amazon could suffer significant financial damage if they ever got hacked.
I don't know about Google, but having worked for Amazon I can tell you they have a large team of security specialists that hang out in the same places as the black hats, and can roll out a fix before the regular security vulnerability report channels find it.
Companies whose business isn't Internet based typically have an aversion to programmers, and pay them less, meaning the only programmers that would work in such an environment are, let's just say, not the cream of the crop.
You can find websites that have lists of unsecured security cameras (I guess that is an oxymoron), many in peoples homes or offices, that you can go watch them put their baby to sleep or watch a half asleep security guard going through his rounds.
You can also find websites dedicated to unsecured network printers, where you can either print things, or even more fun, write messages to the LED display. "Radiation Leak Alert" is popular.
I actually believe the next revolution (which might have already begun), won't be between the have's and have-not's, but between the have-money's and have-hacker-skillz.

Power companies get hacked all the time... you probably don't even hear about it most of the time. They try to follow NERC CIP standards with regards to security....
Fact of the matter is, if you got boxes on the Internet. You have boxes brute forcing your security measures.
Here's my favorte as of late..

Yeah, no kidding.
When I first read that Gibson was coming out with a Hendrix tribute guitar I was like WTF?
Funny now you can't find any mention of that guitar at Gibson or many other places for that matter.
Mark, where in the world did you find those pictures?
They funneled all the R & D in to their Firebird X guitar....................
