Let's give Carol Kaye some credit too - lots and lots of it! Guarantee you've heard her but maybe you didn't know it. She was on the "Wrecking Crew," just one example, if you know who they were. Wiki her and your jaw will drop. An amazing career!

Re: Favorite rock bass lines.
Another vote for Phil Lesh. I like to say, he played lead bass against Jerry's lead guitar.
This thread has a list of many greats and many of my favorites. If I can add a couple more that I actually got to see live: Berry Oakley and Jack Bruce. They could push the lead guitar player to new heights in a live situation by contributing a pounding and melodic bottom end, not just some bass fill.

Gonna mention lots that has been already: Jack Cassidy,Jack Bruce,James Jamerson, Chris Squier, Flea, David Pegg(Tull and Fairport)
Bootsy Collins. But as a bass part " I was made to Love Her" with Stevie Wonder....wow! Crown of Creation...wow, any Live Cream.

Paul Goddard - Atlanta Rhythm Section - Underdog - Spooky
Greg Philbin - REO - T.W.O. - Golden Country
I got a new fretless bass and these two songs now haunt my sleep... In a good way!

Also along the lines of Carol Kaye, check out Leeland Sklar's discography sometime. Here he is lockin' it down with Billy Cobham, also featuring Tommy Bolin's best playing that influenced Jeff Beck to go fusion;

And last but not least, this is what I play almost every time I get my hands on a bass. It has it all in a few measures tone, melody, groove, counterpoint;
