Mitch Colby and the Sun Dragon amps?

Post by Mark »

Earlier in the year we heard a lot about the Jimmy Page Sun Dragon amp which were expensive and made in limited numbers. Mitch did say there would be a cheaper amp coming later on the new year, I seem to remember he stated he would use the same sort of components, but the amp would be made in a more economic fashion.

I have checked from time to time to look for activity, I even emailed Mitch but received no reply.

Has anyone heard what became of this venture?
Yours Sincerely

I'm interested as well.. Especially the mods that (I forget) made 8 watts? Was is a mismatched speaker?

If your interested in building one we know Mitch used-
AB CC resistors RCM resistors.
Ceramic Caps- I forget the actual brand but they are all over the place on ebay. They are the same brand that my 60's Supro uses.
New production Jenson Speaker.
Classic Tone transformers orignal manufacture.

So other than the tweaks to the Coronado we should be able to build on your self :D

I don't know nothin', but I saw Tim Pierce playing a Sun Dragon at LA Vintage Guitars in this video, starting at the one-minute mark:

What are the tweaks to the Coronado?

Doesn't the Coronado produce 24 watts while Page's amp produces 10 watts?

I'm wondering if a RS Spares type of output transformer could reduce the power to that extent?

Xian, Tim Peace really nails the early Page tone with that Tele through the Sun Dragon amp.

The only thing known was the speaker was changed. Maybe the original amp had a 4 ohm load and now has a 16 ohm speaker?
How much wattage could a mismatch shave off?

As I was writing my reply, I noticed that the primary of the output transformer is 8K according to the link to the circuit and the amp is cathode biased which burns off more power. This would be in keeping with 24 watts the amp claims to have.

I wondered if the 6L6 output valves were replaced with 6V6 valves and rebiased, this would significantly reduced the power of the amp to around that 10 watts region.
