One downside I can see to posts becoming uneditable after some time is in the case of documents which are posted and then updated over time. That would mean that all old versions would stay on-line, even if they are obsolete or in error.

I guess I missed this kerfuffle somehow so I don't really get the details of what happened.

But I too think there should be a time limit on deletions, the "deletor" in this case had contributed a lot of useful info/comment. Too bad he had a hissy fit, it seems.

I'm moderator on three forums, and in all forums we decided to add the time limit for any mod.
If you need to update some files, send a PM to a moderator and he'll mod it for you.

Whatever makes it easy on the admin. Whatever makes it easiest on the admin.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

I moderate a forum where there was a meltdown and mass deletion similar to what happened here. We then introduced a one month limit on members wishing to edit their posts. Occasionally a member asks a moderator to edit or delete an older post, and if the request is reasonable, we make the alteration for them.

I missed most of this because I am building an AMP! :D

But I have been reading...... already a lot gone.

I have very limited powers as a mod here.

I don't think we need more rules, as someone requested because this is pretty unusual and in most cases things shake out.

If you are feeling threatened or in harms way, call the authorities and do not post stuff here that can end up biting you in the ass.

I remember the Fartblossum debacle very well and my radar always goes up a notch when somebody starts behaving like him.
Film at 11:00

The sad part is there were some good posts and information posted that soon will be just a vague memory.
So we will just have to have a few more good discussions and problems solved!

Anyway be happy! :D

Dang it. Did I miss the chance to have power too? Just think of all the chaos and mayhem we could have had. :)

The beauty of this place is its anarchy and self-regulation.
Please don't change that.

It is a difficult situation. I feel pretty bad about what happened as this is a good forum where everybody tends to get along. Sure we could add the additional rules just in case this happens again but I like to think this forum is better than that and doesn't need these additional rules.

I don't see this change as being a new rule, in the sense of a rule being something that requires compliance.
No-one need alter what they do, it should have no impact on anyone (excepting Martin's point and the solution put forward).
Rather it should hopefully just be an automated background process, to try and prevent someone vandalising the library.
It seems a trivial concession to make, for the privilege of participating?

Only Scotty can give you more power. Just ask Kirk!
