I AGREE. Let's turn this into a PRO-GUN thread, and be done with it.

I am against blunt objects, and sharp doohickeys.

He wouldn't be dead if it was a knife fight. It's not as easy as you think to kill with a knife, humans are tougher than most realize. I hope none of you fellas have to find out the hard way.

Oh, and by the way, socialism isn't so bad, we have had it in OZ since 1948.

Don't be offended, just open minded.

I tried my darndest to stay out this.............

In my travels I've been in both gun and knife fights; technically shot twice and slashed a couple. A vest and training saved my ass, can't necessarily say the same about some others that were on the business end. I'm the first to speak out against senseless violence, I know what it feels like to live through it.

I've attended 4 autopsies of persons killed with knives. I read your post and realized for the first time that a knife can't kill anyone dead enough.........who knew?

I've always known that this fine forum includes a vast pool of broad knowledge, but I never knew that you were a forensic pathologist.

I'm smart enough to know that the root of all violence starts with the hard of heart and I'm not so openminded that my brains leak out either.

I'm not offended or trying to be a wise ass, just experienced.

Say a prayer for the victims.

ToneMerc, mate,

there is a good reason political comments like mine shouldn't be made on forums, so I apologize for the hyperbole and tone of the comment.

Your are right, there is no guarantee either way. I just know what I would rather face given the choice but unlike you I've never had to so I'm making those assumptions based on what I see in the media.

News reports often go something like 'victim X was stab 20 times and is in a critical condition' or 'the victim was left with wounds requiring X number of stitches' or the 'victim was left with lacerations to face and arms'. a lot of people seem to live to tell the tale.

I assume that, unlike you, most people aren't trained to carry a weapon. Surely that makes some difference?

I take a pretty active interest in US politics as our countries are closely tied. But I don't have a degree in politics either, so I'll apologize for the socialism comment as well. Not really the place for it at all.

What I do have is a fair amount of experience with Schizophrenia/ and Bi-Polar (Manic Depression) . Like the US, a lot of mentally ill are left to there own devices and I've had dealings with many of them in my life growing up in an inner city church. Though again I'm not a psychiatrist, I've seen how that disease works and been on the receiving end of it many times.

I doubt this guy (the mentally ill one) knew how to handle a knife. That was my main point, though I would probably should have said it like that. This guy wasn't a criminal. He is a mentally ill man who didn't take his (imperfect) medication.

I'm sure you would have looked into those confused eyes at some point?

With your experience, would you prefer to face a crazyman who is carrying a knife or a gun?

with respect to your experience and both our prayers, I think I know what the family would have preferred.

I've tried to stay out of this, but I've faced exactly that...

In facing a crazy man who is carrying a knife or a gun, either way, I'd
far prefer to be carrying a gun myself.

Or a sane man with a ball bat, or a machete, shovel, or his bare hands, for that matter. The point is, if someone wants to harm you, and you can't or won't defend yourself to the very best of your ability, you will be harmed.

I'm not willing to be harmed.

Bob

Without a doubt I can put my political foot in my mouth, but lets see if I can extract it somewhat...

The American situation is far more complex than any opinion I could offer and goes deeper than gun laws. I have a lot of time and sympathy for Americans facing these dilemmas as it really is the definition of a recursive problem.

For Australians, we decided the 'best of our ability' was to change the laws and ban them. If a criminal is found with a gun in a drug raid or whatever, it get's added to his sentence. I.e. more time he is behind bars and I'm safe.

They may not be very smart, but they do think twice about flashing guns about or carrying them. Burglars may carry knives, and replica guns are often substituted in hold ups. There really isn't any guns laying around for the mentally ill to pick up. Guns are used between rival bikie gangs (I have a notorious bikie club house 1km from my house) but apart from hearing the odd gun shot, the general public doesn't get caught up. You have to remember crims are essentially selfish. Going to jail tends to limit that selfishness which they don't like much; they prefer not to be in jail...

The fact remains, yourself and ToneMerc know first hand how dangerous this whole thing is. Best of luck to both of you and I hope that you don't have to go through those experiences again.

Hey, we are far from perfect!.

Have you seen us play Cricket? (the game, not the 'Jiminy' type)

Now that would really ruin the US; we don't even know why we bore the shit out of ourselves with it...

Andy, in all honesty and due respect I don't think that this tragedy and or thread should morph into a geopolitical discussion on US gun, violence or mental health policies on TAG.

ToneMerc, That is exactly how I feel about the members of TAG, yourself included.

I enjoy mixing with people who had both these things ( honestly and respect). It's fair comment that it is beyond the scope of Garage Talk, I'll stick to 'music, girls, life' from now on...

My spider hole is calling too...

I'll say it again, criminals don't obey gun laws.
So the only people who are restricted are the law abiding citizen that obeys the laws.

So to disarm the public is political move only to gain further control of the masses.

Keep drinkin' the Kool Aid.

I hope you never have to face an attacker with a gun or a knife.

I am the best public defense.

The tax payers do not fund my training, my ammunition, nor my firearms.

I promise you that I will never set out to harm any person, or operate my weapons in an irresponsible manner.

Put your trust in me, and I will do my best to protect us from those who would do physical harm. I hope I never have to do it, but I train like I will.

Peace
