krash,
I think that's a GREAT sounding amp. But as this site is primarily aimed at builders, are you planning to submit a schematic? Hope so!!
In any case, nice work!!

Re: teaser of a new amp
Well .. the schematics of amps discussed on this forum are not readily supplied by the manufacturer, certainly not while they are still in production.
However this amp does not have that much mystique to a capable amp builder.
12AT7 push-pull cathode bias
300Vish plate
LTPI, 12AX7
vol/tone preamp with one gain stage
voice switch inserts another gain stage between the vol/tone and the PI

krash,
I was kinda needling you,..I've got a few hundred schematics of cool amps that I'll never get around to building. But you have got a great sound there. I haven't spent much time on the "mini" amp side, but I know there are some others in that arena that are also very good (but i haven't heard clips as good as this).
I wondered years ago why no one took an output tube with low output and linked it to a higher wattage output section. About then is when I quit the music "business" as my real business. Vox now has that thing kinda going (though I don't know how successful that design is, since it's linked to a modeling preamp).
Anyway congrats! I spent a couple of years designing and developing the "Mender" (an insert device for Fender amps) and made a little money at it, as well as having a great type tweaking with stuff I love. There's nothing more fun to "ampheads".

How come? Lack of clean headroom, too bright, what? I've always kind of liked the little boogers. The different iterations of the princeton range from IIRC around 330 VDC on the final plates to 420 for the black face.

Sky, i have just always found them a bit boring, although i do find myself wishing i had a stock one from time to time.. but everytime i had one i didnt like it..
I do find them to be nice donor amps though.. 3 of my heads started life as printon reverbs..

Re: teaser of a new amp
Well thanks for the kudos, and really, I won't withhold schematics from amp techs mostly because I figure they may eventually find reason to repair or mod one of my amps, and obviously everything in this amp I learned from someone else who was willing to share information with me.ampdoc1 wrote:krash,

Well there are not a lot that are push-pull, and I think that's one key difference. But again, thanks for the props I am very pleased with the sound of the Serena. It is very easy to record since it doesn't drive the mic hard enough to cause compression or distortion in an SM57 diaphragm or require the use of a pad switch on a condenser, so it makes placement real easy and predictable.I haven't spent much time on the "mini" amp side, but I know there are some others in that arena that are also very good (but i haven't heard clips as good as this).

One of the potential-customer questions I have fielded is about like, why don't you drive this amp into a load-box with a line out (like a MiniMASS) and then run the line out into a SS power amp so you have truly variable output amp... and that's an intriguing idea that I may experiment with in the future.

Very nice, Josh-Just one q. Not that I see a lot of need for them, but how does this design respond to input from outboard effects-either rackmount, multi, or stomp? Also- the "Re*velization" process on your speakers has a phenominal impact on the overall tone! Have you, or are you, used/using hemp-cones. I have 5 different amp rigs using them(T*ne-T*bb*e brand) and THRILL at the tone..They are supposed to be high sensitivity at lower volume level design, and so far I have to believe that to be true, your's sound remarkably similar. Whatever it is you are doing, keep it up--it's great stuff so far!!

Re: teaser of a new amp
I haven't tried it with a lot of effects. I have used my clean boost pedal, Tube Screamer, wah, Danelectro Cool Cat (chorus), and a Line 6 Delay Modeler. The only thing is that the delay pedal works like you'd expect any delay does in front of an amp (which is, suboptimal at best). The amp is screamin' with a clean boost.
I would like to try a hemp cone speaker, and on my list of stuff to order is a couple of Cannabis Rex speakers. Mostly I am interested in trying them for higher-power amps in hopes to get rid of the cone cry I run into all the time with paper cone speakers. My 72 amp is pretty bright and might benefit from a warmer speaker like a hemp cone speaker. However TT's are a bit spendy for me to put in standard for these amps, but maybe as an option.

This is some of the best small amp sounds I've ever heard... Good guitar work in addition to the tone. This is a PP 6SN7 triode amp that I use. http://home.comcast.net/~rjguitars/6SN7/ComboAmp.jpg

Re: teaser of a new amp
I built a push-pull 12AU7 amp for practicing - pretty good sound. The distortion is a little ratty, so I have to go back into it some day. I put it into my old Peavey Rage 158 combo with a Weber Sig speaker, but it sounds a lot better into a GH12-30.
