Guitar Building Kit

Post by JoeCon »

Guys,

Anyone familiar with these guys?
http://bulldogbodies.com/main.sc

There are some awesome woodworkers here who could probably turn out some nice guitars if these are well made.

Anyone, Beuhler? Anyone?....

From what I have heard, these guys have a great product - not too much more in price for highly figured tops:

Re: Bulldog

Go to the My Les Paul Forum and search for Bulldog. Lots of problems - neck fitting issues, neck angle, tops splitting, quality issues, etc.

I have a Bulldog that a friend and I put together. In the end the guitar ended up being better then any Historic I've played but we had a number of issues - bad frets, poorly planed fretboard, and non-working truss rod. When I sent it off to the finisher, he was convinced that the top wasn't even maple.

Precision Guitar makes a much higher quality kit but they are not historically accurate.

My friend Steve built a Grizzly tele and it played good but I'm sure the quality is on lower side. He calls it the Waycaster.

I really love the single cut jr.to buy one is big bucks, the thing is I had one in high school and sold it.it was a student guitar and I wanted a black beauty with all the app.mother of pearl blocks and white binding. So do you guys feel one could be purchased and put together and be better than a production one from today.I would love to have one like the one in the guitar section, his was all redone and was the tv yellow.Awesome lookin guitar. It this kinda stuff that brings out the 14yr old kid in me.Ive always loved the feel of a Gibson guitar.i have my 1979 tobacco burst still and it's so easy to play. Thanks for posting this info guys, this may be another sickness for me.mikey :D

Mikey

You're the guy to finish that guitar for sure!! I'm with you, a single cut junior is just what I want.

Here's what a local guy does with them, you buy the kit and he finishes them for you. Looks like this...

Been looking for an LP kit for a while. Precision is one of the best I have seen.
Omar... what is not historically accurate? Wondering if it would be a deal breaker for me. Some stuff would matter. Other stuff, not so much.

Headstock angle is 14 instead of 17 degrees. The headstock is made from a single piece of mahogany and doesn't have the Gibson 'wings'. On the Precision 59 model, I'm guessing the carve is not vintage accurate. Maybe some other things but thats all I know.

He's a builder from northern NH, just saw his stuff on Craigslist.
He showed a Black Beauty Custom he did too, or so he says.

I will probably buy a Precision kit this summer. They look good and the price is very reasonable. I'm O.K. with the head-stock angle being off. I want the body shape, arching, and neck angle to be right. I also want a fat neck, which they offer.
I might see if they will let me supply the maple for the top. I have some nice eastern Sugar with serious curl.
