 Well, THAT is some interpretive-ass, avant theater terror brainiac shit.

Music/playing/singing still brilliant, tho.

Yeah, what he said!
Interesting, but I like it better when she just sings and plays upright.. in fact not so much the singing.

We took a 3-day weekend to Philadelpia and Reading, PA.

Friday night we saw Gregg Allman at the Tower Theater. The opening act was Jaimoe's Jasssz Band. Jaimoe is working with a great band featuring Jimmy Mack on guitar. In terms of guitar playing, Jimmy Mack had it hands down.

Gregg is working with a great band. His voice sounds as good as ever and they played a good long set. Scott Sharrard is a very fluid guitar player and very professional. I really enjoyed the show. It was great fun to hear the tunes rearranged and re-imagined for a horn section, etc. Don't expect Allman Bros. style jam band format. There is a 3 piece horn section -- they've got charts and the works. Things are more scripted. It's still great stuff.

In retrospect, there were some disappointments, but don't let my comments in this area keep you away. Keep this in perspective -- these are minor complaints. Go see him if he hits your town. I realized after a while that Scott dialed in his guitar tone and it was essentially unchanging throughout the performance. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STovOPOsPYk This lack of tonal texture was disappointing. The other disappointment of the night was the rearrangement of Whipping Post, leaving out Duane's signature lick that comes between "tied" and "to the whipping post." I think the horn section could re-invent this to great effect. I thought it neutered the song.

Saturday night took us to Reading for their annual "Jazz Festival" which I guess has all sorts of music. We saw David Bromberg (decidedly not jazz) and his big band in a small modern theater. It was off the charts great! I felt lucky because his set included more electric blues than he often does. There was a good mix of electric and acoustic, country blues, old timey, and bluegrass.

Both of these guys are up there in years. Catch them if you can.

Thanks for that. JB is my all time fave.
After hearing the first few songs it reminded me of Flash. But the rest of the album has some really great moments and some new favorite songs.
Great playing, good compositions, relevant, and
the new vocalist isn't bad either! What a career that man has had. Old enough to be heading for the barn, and his playing is better than ever. I wish I had the $500 for my wife and I to see him in Atlanta.
