My favorite amp of all I've built is the Marshall 1987 circuit (my "Fiddy" series--I've built three of them). Been playing it regularly for almost a year now, and, although I often twist the tone stack knobs to see if they improve things, I always return them all to noon. I get all the tonal variation I need out of the Bright and Normal channel volume knobs (remember, my builds are permanently, internally jumpered--channels paralleled). So I'm thinking my next build might be a three-knob 1987: Bright vol, Normal vol, Master vol. Power switch. That's it.

Yes, less is more. Amps should have a volume and a tone knob, or in the "fiddy" case two volumes that control the tone as well. Nice...

I'm gonna check that out once you build it!!

Thanks....
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

I've also noticed that I mostly leave the TMB at noon on my Marshallesque amp. However, I do tweak 'em for different kinds of axes.
That said, most players stick to one or a few that are similar so such a minimalist control panel would be really nice - streamlined!

When did this place turn so douche tastic?

For the sake of avoiding conflict I'm done contributing to the forum.

First, what are you talking about? Are you taking your valuable marbles and going home? :P

Second, it's the Garage Talk section. The humor doesn't meet your garage talk expectations?

Third, what conflict are you avoiding?

Fourth, will you be back when you want to sell your book? I hope not, that will probably generate more conflict that I assume you would rather avoid.

Dear builders who know what the hell you're doing: I beg you, please do not flee. You are the guys whose brains I come here to pick, and I'm the first to say I can use all the help I can muster. I can name several of you who have been very helpful, and I see some names I recognize from other forums. If I weren't semi-destitute, I would offer generous bribes.
It's a guitar amplifier. How hard can it be?
