unknown guitarist you may want to hear? new sounds?

Post by dragonbat13 »

Has anybody ever heard of Sonny Landreth? He is from south louisiana where I am from. His album "Grant Street Live" is recorded in a juke that was once a dairy processing plant. I know he plays an original dumble
amp. I believe it is an ODS. In any case the amp was put in an old freezer/cooler in the back of the joint so the soundman could mike the amp. He is a very unique and good player and the tracks are UNBELIEVABLE for a live performance. I have never heard any of his other albums but after listening to some clips on this forum of some other amps I can understand why these amps have such a following. I wish I could stumble on one in a Pawn shop for a hundred dollars, don't you?

Yep.... Sonny's one of the best slide players around. He's been putting "glass on steel" for quite awhile and worked with many artists. Try any of his albums and I'll bet you'll like them. Some of his more popular albums include "Levee Town" or “The Road We’re On”...... you can check out some of his video's on Youtube also.
Sonny has just started doing columns in Guitar Player magazine also. Not to mention his web site.... www.sonnylandreth.com

Enjoy!

If you're a real Sonny Landreath fan you may want to check out "Mel Melton and the wicked Mojos" I've seen Sonny a few times both with his own band and with John Hiatt. One of the best if not THE best "behind the slide" players out there.

Being from New Orleans, I'm another huge Sonny fan. I've seen him mant times, Rock and bowl, etc, but saw him last at the NOLA jazz fest. He was playing through an ODS/strat combo and got a monster tone out of it. The Youtube clip will help you appreciate his tone and style. It took me about 6 months just to get the hang of one of his easier tunes, Creole Angel with all the nuances.
Fender is supposed to soon announce a Sonny Landreth signature strat set up the way he likes, off the board a bit with .013s.

I'm looking forward to catching him and my other favorite slide player (Derek Trucks) at this summers Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago.

Should be a heck of a show.

Here is a pic I took at copper mountain a couple years ago.

He was also the sideman of a fella called John Hyatt for MANY years!!

One of my favorites, and a REALLY nice fella to boot!

He plays a tan 100W ODS in 50W mode, I believe it is a "Bluesmaster" based on an interview he gave in the tonequest report.
