I'm thinkin' Junior Brown. But I don't see the slide side of his tricky guitar, that is, if it IS Junior Brown.

BTW, that pick of George was taken I believe during the filming of
Help!

He would have been 22 years old.
Amazing what they accomplished in a few short years.

As Ed Sullivan used to say, they are the youngsters from Liverpool.

It was a really big shoe. :D

Junior Barnard, played with The Texas Playboys in the 40's. Total pioneer. He's all over the "Tiffany Transcriptions" records. He had a real dirty, aggressive, distoted playing style that I fell in love with 20yrs ago. Bob Wills called him "Fat Boy" or "Roly Poly". Everytime I go back and listen to him I'm like "oh yea, THAT"S where I ripped off that lick". He played mostly an Epiphone Emperor(HUGE archtop), and strapped 2 pickups on it, drilled an extra output jack on it, and ran each pickup to a different amp. I mean, this was wild stuff back then.
Apparently Leo himself worked on the guitar . http://www.fretboardjournal.com/blog/wh ... leo-fender

He was the lead player in Bob WIlls' band, with Eldon Shamblin also on guitar and Tiny Moore on electric mandolin, at a time when the Wills band was very popular, traveling all over the southwest playing dance halls. Bob was a player himself and encouraged his own musicians, who were very into swing and jazz of the time. Jr was strongly influenced by Charlie Christian.
Tiny Moore, one of my all-time favorite musicians, was also influenced by the music of the era, including the Reinhardt/Grappelli recordings.
The Wills band is one of the greatest examples of an enlightened bandleader, who kept his finger on the pulse of his audience, and still hired killer players, and let them play.
He has been a role model to many a band leader.

Tiny is right up there with Jr in my eyes(hell, like you said, Wills always had killer top notch guys- don't forget Jimmy Wyble!). You would never know Tiny was playing a mando(4 string), and to this day, it's the only mando that I can bear

Here is an overwhelming archive of Western Swing that a guy ripped from 78's : http://archive.is/ZkKf

and a clip of junior tearin it up : http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xu4ogd ... ence_music

The only footage of him in action : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_klFc1xlEdc

Yes! Jimmy Wyble! The soloist on the original Roly Poly. Just died a couple of years ago, was into contrapuntal jazz playing, there are vids of him.
Great links Smoke, thanks.
