Californian's (can't) say our place names.
I consider myself an all-around New Yorker. I grew up on Long Island, and went to summer camp near East Greenbush (Valatie, to be exact and they left that one out.) I've driven the whole length of I-87, I-90, the Taconic State Pkwy, and old Rt 17 before they made i-86. Even got a speeding ticket in Olean for going 37 in a 25, c. 1972-3. Heck, I didn't know my Chevy Vega could go that fast.

however, the towns of Worchester and Dorchester totally baffle me. one is pronounced "wooster" the other is "door-chester".... 'splain that one please!

I think it's Dawchesta. One of my favorites is Scituate. My father was born in Woosta.

More on place names in the Commonwealth.

Then there's Peabody. NOT pronounced like "help me mister Pee-boddy." If you want to not be laughed at by the locals, shorten those vowels way up. P'bidy. Correct pronunciation helped get one of my co workers back across the US border; the immigration agent figured a foreign faker wouldn't know the correct pronunskyation.

Leo,

I have to laugh at this one. Have a buddy that used to work in Boston. There was a fellow at his job named Endicott "Peebiddy" (sic). When I heard that for the first time...called himself 'Cawh-dee Peebiddy...

...sounded like a toilet flushing to hear him speak

Matt H,

"Manchester is a bit of an anomaly for a bunch of different reasons ..." you can say that again! And I live in Manchester.

Also here is another river called PiscataQUOG not to be confused with the PiscataQUA river. Right!!
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

There's nothing wrong with a tuner fish sandwich, except that I never really liked them. That's NY, not MA. How'd this thread go so far north/east?
