807 Beer Beam Power Tube

Post by billyz »

Has anyone tried this tube type?
I think all my future builds will be using The 807 tube.

New ones don't hold up.... unless someone has made a better one in the last few years. I built lots of 25L15s with them....in the end the svet 6L6 was better in that amp. I thought the same thing tho...looked like a great tube spec wise.

Exceeding ratings can cause a malt down.

Here's a real one. I actually made a couple morse code contacts long ago using this tube in a crystal controlled transmitter.

As it turns out, "807" is ham-lingo for a cold beer.

You're serious about it? On a commercial build I'd worry some dingus would stick his finger/tongue/johnson in the anode cap, or try hot swapping and God only know what else people come up with. Not everyone gets what 400V DC really is.

I have a pair been sitting round for years, I was thinking for a 5B6, if and when. Looking at that huge raised up structure inside I'd worry a bit about vibration in a big venue and/or on top of a loud 4x12. You might need to road test them under rock'n'roll duress.

I recall Cliff Schecht here using them and making some comments, something about controlling inherent oscillation from the anod cap wiring, with a small resistor or a coil of wire but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe he'll show up. Some Standel people on the Hoffman site, maybe they'll drop by for a chat?

They are attractively cheap and plentiful. Look very steampunk / Flash Gordon. Use big Bakelite knobs on your builds.

Here's what I remembered from the Cliff Schecht post:
...I've had great luck with 807's in Fender builds so far but they can oscillate like a mofo unless you add a 10 Ohm resistor wrapped with 10 turns of wire. This is an old ham trick that acts as a low Q choke to prevent RF oscillations. I'm thinking a head would be cooler and more in tune with my current needs...

The ones from Holland definitely have a different flavour than the British ones, the American ones sound like crap and not a lot of power, and the Canadian ones are very nice but like to run colder than the European ones ;)

They like warm beer in the UK, 807 looks to hold a proper British pint, might sell well there. Swap out the middle pot with a fixed resistor and stick a tap on the front panel, no more need to go up to the bar.

I'm laughing but I'm kinda bummed, I was hoping for a good 807 discussion...
