Retirement Begins - Day 1

Post by RJ Guitars »

Woke up early but eventually realized I didn't need to... I can already feel the stress lifting.

Had a cup of coffee as I responded to all my emails this morning without feeling the pressure to rush through things before I head out the door to work.

Among the very first of my retirement projects is to build a new amp shop on a piece of land we are buying up in Colorado. Looking forward to a few more amp builds and a slower pace of life!

Thanks everybody, I appreciate all the positive comment.

I'll be on the front range North of Denver.

There is no official retirement age here... it's determined by many factors including: how old you are, how long you've been working, who you work for, how well you prepared for it, how lucky you've been, and how you set your priorities.

Good to have a nice view to rest the eyes between amp making operations - I see you have that. Enjoy!

For Ang3lus: retirement age can also depend on when your employer does you out of your job, then you're overqualified (the politically correct way of saying too old) and nobody wants to pay what you're worth. Of course those who get that kind of retirement are free to stack cans & boxes at the market, or flip burgers for minimum wage, just don't admit you have any education or experience on your application form if you want to get hired.

Congratulations and good luck RJ. I am so jealous. I'm still a few years away from packing it in, and hate the rat race more every day. I hope you have a very peaceful retirement.

We are generally eligible for Social Security (government retirement plan) starting at age 62 and the maximum benefit can be had by waiting until age 70. Of course, it is important to do the math and guess at what age you get the most benefit because life is finite. We receive Medicare (government medical insurance for old folks) at age 65. Neither of these is really adequate for a life style most people want to have in retirement. None of this determines when you stop working. I know a man in his 80's who still puts more than a full week into his business. If you have the resources, you can retire whenever you choose. Some people have the money but never retire, like that 80 year old I know.
