Sound City Concord -- sleeper?

Post by xtian »

Looks like you can pick these 2x12 combos up for under $600. Partridge iron, 2x EL34. Front controls are not exciting, but maybe room to mod. Anyone played one?

No experience with it. I'm going to guess you can get the price down some. It is probably worth it just for the parts. I don't know if my take on this is accurate, but here's what I figure:
$200 cab, tolex and grill cloth look great
$100 speakers
$200 transformers
$20 wheel's castors
$30 chassis
$50 for whatever else you can scavange -- tubes, pots, jacks, sockets, etc.
deduct $50 for the fugly slide controls
Start with an offer of $300? No one is going to pay $600, do you think?

Oh, not me. Too many amps in the house. If I don't stack them carefully, I may get crushed.

Me too! Either it is a screaming deal or I don't touch it these days. This one is too ugly/non-traditional to build a nice amp in. You'll spend a lot of time, but then have to discount b/c of a lack of buyers (due to its looks).

I think I might be the only fool that actually thinks that amp looks cool... very different. Sure it's unconventional, but that adds to its appeal (for my warped sense of anti-aesthetics). Never seen or heard one. I think you are right that it would be very hard to sell.

That grill cloth brings back memories. My first "real" amp was a Sound City stack. 50 Plus with two 4 x 10 cabs.....

Me too! My first real cab was a battered Sound City 2x12 with checker tape round the front edge, sold it but I sure wish I had it now, I used to love that store in London where all the musos hung out.

I actually like the way that amp looks. I think it's sort of George Jetson cool!
