This one is inexpensive and good--I find myself using it most often because it's small and easy to handle:

This Klein MM700 is full featured and under $100. I bought one as a companion for my Fluke 87V. It does most everything my Fluke does, has decent accuracy, and fairly rugged. Doesn't have quite the feel of the Fluke, but at 1/4th the price of an 87V, I have no regrets.

Seconded on the Fluke 115. It's available at Lowe's for $200. The 117 is about the same, but it has a low Z input option for working on mains power.

At $70 & $100 the Klein MM600 & MM700 look like a great deal, and get good reviews.

Some of the Greenlee brand meters available are very good. Most of the ~$80+ range are rebadged Brymen brand meters, which are highly regarded. such as the DM-200 or 210 models.

Amprobe is a quality brand too, my main meter is an am-270.

If you google "eevblog multimeter comparison" that forum has a giant comparison of 70+ meters. Honestly for most amp work you don't need many features just a safely designed meter. Fluke 101 will get you there cheap.

All this meter talk got me started. My Fluke model 12 has been in my travel kit for at least 35 years. The select button stopped working and makes it only measure DC and conductance.

I found an 87 III on cragslist. $125. Meter is in great shape. I ordered a 400ma fuse which had been blown on the milliamperes input. The 10am fuse on the amp current input was good.

Thanks to the thread for lighting a fire under my axx. It’s been a good year for test gear. I also bought a used textronix 2245 scope in good working condition And also a package of scope probes including 2 6020 probes.

Now it’s time to repair a barn full of tech
