The sound of distortion

Post by Normster »

I thought this was an interesting presentation...

Pete Millet does a good job of explaining odd/even order harmonics and distortion in general. Since 'Wrecks and Dumbles are known for "rich harmonic content" I think it would be interesting to see scope patterns that show harmonic peaks.

Sorry to be such a geek about this stuff. ;)

Interesting.

I guess that's why some of us prefer the amp tone with the PI unbalanced as that minimises even order cancellation. Probably also with power tubes unmatched?

And I also guess that's why Dumbles are mainly preamp overdrive and less power amp overdrive as the preamp section is single ended and the power amp section, is P-P.

I know there's some software out there that allows you to use your soundcard as a RTA, so maybe someone could get the harmonic graphical representation of a Dumble?

Uh, all guitar amp preamps are "single ended", tho that is really only useful as a descriptive phrase when talking about power amp stages...

In that case, then I'll say most preamp stages are single ended (audiophile amps included). There's no need for push/pull as no power required in the preamp stages to drive the next stage.

Only thing I've seen is push/pull stage for reverb driver.
