Speaker cleaning?

Post by D-Day »

Last year I ended up with a Legend Rock 'n Roll 50. The only merit to the thing has turned out to be the sweet Celestion silvers. After not finding the Legend itself capable of providing me any tones I want to listen to I had been running them (still in the Legend) with my Liverpull. That sounded SWEET! So now I have a proper 2x12 and decided to pull the silvers out of the Legend and put 'em in there. Well holy cow, the dustberg on the one is insane and a little bit (okay, alot) beyond anything I've ever seen before. How would you guys deal with something like this?

Thanks for your time!

D

(oh yeah, the pic was taken after I'd poked around a little bit with a pen cap, it was even nastier before)

Just install them and turn your amp up to 11.

Seriously? I cranked 'em up pretty good in the months leading up to their removal and they came out looking like that.

Looks like a job for canned air (from a computer shop)

***disclaimer - have never actually tried this, but that's the first thing that came to my mind.

I would use a vacuum cleaner with the dusting brush attachment.
Then you can delicately brush on the cone while it sucks up the dust.
Anything more aggressive than that could be harmful to the cones.

from what ive heard.... removing the dust WILL change the tone... if you like em as is, why not just leave em alone, that dust may have mojo that could take another 20 years to replace.... but i could also be completly wrong

Baloney dust imo

Anyhow it's gone now. I gently scraped the grooves in the surround with the pen cap. then I used the brush attachment with the vacuum cleaner and then I hit what little was left with the canned air. I have a totally boss Soldano 2x12 I'm going to throw them in. My Liverpull is going to sound FAT

Oh yeah I almost forgot to say thanks for the advice.

Save the vacuum bag, you will want to put it back. Did you flip the speakers
180 to rectify the gravity sag?

LOL!

But yes I will be flipping them 180 to even future dust dispersion. I figure why redust what was already dusted? Let the parts of the cone and surround that were left out for the last 30 years get theirs for the next 30. And I'm being serious.
