Woody Pro build

Post by jcool666 »

I've been contemplating building a Woody Professional and in examining the only schematic I could find (https://schematicheaven.net/fenderamps/1946_pro.pdf) I identified a few changes I'd like to make. I'm trying to use everything period, except obviously an electrodynamic speaker. I am going use a filter choke to replace the field coil. The two points I'm trying to figure out are this: the schematic doesn't list what type of rectifier tube to use. I found some documentation that said the 5U4, but I'm not sure if I can find the older version that would have been available in 1946 since the most common version, the GB, was released in the 50's. I was thinking about using a 5X4, which is peroid, but I'm not 100% if the 2 are interchangeable. The other change I want to make is to use 6J7s for the preamp tubes instead of 6SJ7s. Other than the grid caps, I think the 2 are close enough. Anyone have any input to tell me if I'm headed down the road to ruin on this? And yes, I did catch the error in the paraphase PI on the schematic and I know how to correct it.

This source says 5U4 rectifier: http://ampwares.com/amplifiers/fender-woody-pro/ You could easily buy a 5U4G if you want the ST envelope, or a 5U4GB will sub for the earlier versions, and I can't imagine it will make any difference.
