I'm putting together a "parts bin" 5e4a super with some tweaks. I'm wavering on the power tubes should I run:
6973's
7591a's
6v6gt's
6aq5's
The amp will be fixed bias with 370-375vdc on the plates. The OT is 20w @ 9k 8ohms.
Don't worry I'll post pics once the panels arrive from bnp.

I vote 6v6s.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.
Re: 5e4a modified
I like 6AQ5's but would NOT want them to have over 305v on them.
6V6's sound quite reasonable.
So, you may need to rule those out.

Re: 5e4a modified
I have an original with 6v6's and it sounds great.
I think it is a better sounding amp than the 5f4.
I have a friend who wanted more power so I built him a 4 holer using 6v6's.
It sounds great too.

Re: 5e4a modified
I've built quite a few clones of the 5F4 and 5E4A over the years for people. It is always the one I seem to go back to for some reason. I agree the 5E4a is the best sounding one of the bunch.

PT came from an RCA 416 movie projector and is rated at 210-240ma at 140V, 6VCT @ 2.5A. Technically speaking I could run the screens at 195-200V and the plates at 385V.

Re: 5e4a modified
And the winner ended up being 6V6's with the option of 7591a's
