fender deluxe reverb

Post by 3kings89 »

Hi, I have a Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb (reissue) and I wanted to know if I can mod it to sound more like a Dumble? I'm pretty sure that he based the Dumble amps off a Fender Deluxe but with more volume. By the way is this true? Thanks
I use heavy strings, tune low, play hard and floor it. Floor it. That's technical talk.

I don't think he used Deluxes due to the relatively low power, but since most Fenders are very similar and have enough tubes, you could do it.

The biggest problem you'd face would be dealing with the printed circuit board. These are really a PITA to modify even for the most experienced (I have a BSEE and 25 years electronics experience) builders. I wouldn't touch one.

The best thing to do would be get a silverface Fender (almost any model at least as powerful as a Deluxe Reverb) and mod that. Otherwise you'd be looking at installing a hand wired board in your DRRI which will cost you close to $300 just for parts. Time and labor are significant and I would not recommend this to a novice builder.

It can be done, you need one of those circuit writer pens to re-do the tonestack wiring.

I helped a friend mod his DR Re-issue with GREAT results.

Send me a PM I can tell you what to change/swap, you really can't do an OD circuit, but you can really make it scream!!

I built this one on a Mojo DR chassis so that I could swap it out in my DR cabinet with the regular Mojo DR kit amp I built. Super Reverb/Bassman Iron, 6L6's, Weber relay boards. Faceplate is temporary as I get one custom made.

The Best Deluxe Mod

Post by SRSatterfield »

I had this done to my deluxe a couple weeks ago. Replace the 6v6 power tubes with the larger 6L6, and if your a self respecting kind of guy, opt for a tube that is CRYOGENIC treated. Next, replace the 5AR4 tube rectifier with a solid state insert version of the same tube. This will give you a ton more response and clean headroom. Do not do only the rectifier mod, you will destroy your amplifier, you need the 6L6 tubes to handle the new power.
The principal behind this is that there is A.) no more power sag from the tube rectifier = dynamics, and B.) clean headroom from the 6L6. By the way... this is completely reversible (6L6 and 6v6 tubes fit in same sockets, rectifier comes in drop in replacement, goes in existing socket). Try it, you will be happy, despite the simplicity.

A different approach would be to try a Hicks Mender. I think someone who goes by ampdoc1 could set you up. 8)

I say leave the amp alone, and plug in a Zendrive or Ethos.
