79 Deluxe Reverb volume problem

Post by passfan »

Signal seems to be getting by this volume pot when it is turned down. Swapped the pot over from the first channel and the same issue . Anyone run into this issue ?

#1 test the tubes.
#2 voltage chart the amp.
If you don't have a tube tester swap V-1 and V-4 12AX7

Swap the first preamp tube with the second, does the issue then move to the other channel?

Make sure the path to ground is good. I think this means its physical mount to the chassis in this case.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

If it's just a little signal, that's normal. Most pots don't actually get all the the way to the ground terminal. If it's a big signal, you have a bad ground, or a bad pot.

Or a bad tube - really!
It may be not be credible until it's been personally experienced.

I'll buy that. The signal appears at cathode and plate.

You never play the amp on zero anyway, so why the fuss?

When I was a teen, I had a friend who had a peavey head & cab. we'd be in his bedroom with the door closed and he'd playing his guitar. All of a sudden, his mom bursts through the door and yells "turn that thing down!" And he'd show her: "look mom, the volume control is all the way down!" - which it was. When she left the room, we both laughed because the two of us knew good and well that the guitar had a volume control too. :D
