1972 Fender Champ Kit AA764 circuit available?

Post by Scumback Speakers »

Ok, as the title says, I'm looking to get a Silverface Champ kit (no vibrato), and then put a 12" speaker into a combo cab.

Checked Mojotone, no dice, blackface only, and I want to get a 4/8/16 ohm capable output tranny for it, just because I like
the versatility, and I've got way too many frigging speakers lying around.

Did some searches, eBay has crap, just parts/chassis stuff.

Does anyone make a full kit with this type setup, or am I sourcing a boatload of parts and modifying the
crap out of a 5F1 kit?

Haven't had to build an amp in about 8 years, previous ones were the D'Lite head, and three different Metro / Marshall
kits with upgraded parts/trannies, which are fairly easy to do if you pay attention.

But this will be my first foray into Fender territory...unless someone has an early 70's Silverface Champ
they want to sell...that's another option.

Let me know what's out there, TAG members!

Thanks!

TM, link to the circuit looks right, but I'd also need the combo cab. The link you sent me for the rebuild kit (thanks by the way), only has the parts for the chassis. They don't list a cab. I'm starting from scratch on this, so I'd need it all, minus tubes and a speaker. Think I'd prefer to go 12" speaker, as I haven't found a 10" or 8" I'm happy with yet.

Agree. But then, I haven't found a Champ I'm happy with, either.

Yes, you are going to have to piece meal it. As far as a cabinet, you may want to contact the guy below. I have used a couple of his raw cabs in the past, he's on eBay as well.

Mojotone has the cab you want set up for a 12" for 230 bucks.
Just note that the silverface amps run the V+ so high that when driven hard the output stage drives the 6V6 too hard and sounds like crap!
With over 400 volts on the plate a strong output tube will idle at up to 50 ma , way above what it should be!

LOL... I get what you mean. I just don't get the fascination with these amps. Now if you are talking about for harp that's another story.

A Princeton chassis & "12 cabinet might work for you? Change faceplates & many fewer parts. Otherwise an easy path. Or just spend & get an Allen Amp SE kit.

Ok, so my fascination with the Champ is based on playing one at Guitar Center in 1973. Silverface
with Vol/Bass/Treble and it screamed like "Crossroads" by Cream when cranked.

Of course I wasn't a gear whoring, speaker inspecting player then. I think I need to go find one
and see if this is really worthwhile or if it's just a pipe dream memory of a kid.

In the meantime I took out my Gibsonette GA-8 (basically a dual 6V6 SE Class A Champ) and
fired it up last night with one of my H75 speakers. Holy crap it was loud. So maybe the thing
to do is to find one in LA somewhere, take the GA-8 and my guitar along, and do a side by side
comparison before I shell out $5-600 in parts and build one.

Thanks for all the help with this, I really appreciate it.

Here's one for $400. You couldn't build it for that even if you could source all the parts.

Allow me to pass some info on to you,
I have over the years had 5 of these amps and had many different speakers in them and in regards to the Crossroads sound the darn stock crappy 8" , speaker made that sound happen , to the tune of the speaker doing 80% of the heavy lifting towards that goal!!

Yeah, I hear you. I'm swapping 10's out in my older GA-8 with the Scumbag mods. The THD 10" I had in
there was getting hurt. I just put in a new Celestion Tube 10 speaker, it's a bit better, but boy does
it need to be broken in.

Going to go look for a 20 or 30 oz ceramic magnet 10" speaker next from Eminence, Celestion, or maybe WGS.

And before anyone suggest W***r, no thank you.

Sorry man. Don't mean to bash the dream amp of your youth. We all have one of those. For me it was a Mesa Boogie 22 cal and a Jim Kelley.

Actually I had the GA-8 Gibsonette first, the Champ was an honorable mention second in the list for small watt great sounding amps. So no worries!

Here's proof that a 10 incher will fit in a champ with some mods depending on the speakers frame.
The OT is a 4 and 8 ohm Mojotone, but if I where to do another one with a 8 ohm driver I would step up to something like a 8 watt OT for a bit more bottom end that is also a little tighter!

I wish someone made a interleaved one arould this wattage, looks like come winter I will try my hand at winding one!

This a 82 BF reissue with the glued in baffle, the earlier amps with a removable baffle is easyier to rework .
