5E8-A Low Powered Twin 6V6's..?

Post by Homebelly »

Getting ready to build a 5E8-A and wondering if there would be any reason why i couldn't pop some 6V6's in there?

Thinking there would need to be a re-bias.

But also wondering if i would need to swap out the two rectifier tubes maybe.?

No reason you can't, but even with just one recto tube you will then have a stiffer power supply and far less output stage interaction taking place.
I would build it as intended and get a power attenuator inbetween the amp and speaker(s).
Remember a big part of these amps sound was the GE or Tung sol 6L6 type output tubes and the great interleaved Triad output Transformers!
If you really only want some 22 watts by means of 6V6 tubes then you only need 125 ma out of a power Transformer.
