2018 Monkeymatic Shasta Reverb

Post by xtian »

Just started my second 1x12 combo based on Princeton Reverb. My first one <http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=23029> I gave on permanent loan to Jeri Jones of Blame Sally, and she’s been gigging it regularly.

The new one gets a Douglas fir cabinet, $49 steel chassis from eBay, solid state recto, ClassicTone iron, Jensen Jet Tornado 12” neodymium speaker.

My table saw was making slightly concave edges, making joining the 6” fir boards impossible, so I dropped $280 on a new Porter Cable 6” benchtop jointer. Works like a boss.

Got some coats of gun oil on the cabinet, and the baffle and rear panels done. Sure is pretty!

Board populated (this is the Hoffman layout). Now I have to wait for the chassis to arrive on Monday.

Finished, except for missing hardware like strain relief and cable clamps. Fired up without issues, sounding supreme! Though the reverb is dark. Will try another tank.

Man, that thing rocks - even unplugged.

You're feeding my addiction to gustshots, though

I want to restate my appreciation for the Hoffman layout. Also, using the JJ 40/20/20/20uF cap can. This amp is dead quiet at idle. The only hum comes from the reverb circuit, and can be mitigated by positioning the reverb pan properly.

I did, however, add a choke and 47uF reservoir cap, which are not in Hoffman’s design.

The classictone PT <http://www.classictone.net/40-18027.html> has 630vAC and 550vAC HT taps—I’m using the 550v tap, which gives me ~350v at the plates.

Great looking cabinet! Its amazing how much a choke can change and improve the sound of an amp.
Thanks for posting pics.
