Cool info Dave, I like Joe, and I was pissed when he switched from Marshall’s to Fenders, but the more I hear him the more I like his new sound....
As a side question, what was the purpose of the. 2 tube rectifiers on the twins? Did it lower voltages even more?
Thanks Joe

Hi Joe,

Way back when, I liked Joe's Marshall/Dumble hybrid setup but listening to it now, there are times where I find it a bit congested. When he switched to the 2 Bassman/2 Tweed Twin setup, it sounded gloriously clear to me. He is now using four Tweed Twins on stage. There are two Tweed Twins: the High Power 5F8A circuit (which is what Joe and Keefus use) and the 5E8A Low Power circuit (which is what Clapton uses). It is the Low Power Tweed Twin that uses two 5U4G rectifiers and the High Power a single GZ34. Personally, I prefer the High Power.

For your comparison and contemplation:

High Power Tweed Twin

Finally, this is just ridiculously over-the-top, but good fun. Listen to those amps sing. I think this setup just blows away his Jubilee/Dumble rig:

Xtian, the reissue is actually four rectifiers and one power tube running single ended :P

That looks nice. Glad they did it. What is the purpose of the ground switch? Maybe there for extra help in case of bad AC wiring? Or just for looks? I can't see any relevant wires going to it.

Gday Aaron, I was asking as a side question if Dave knew why some twins used 2 recto tubes, what their purpose was.
If you know why you can school me.
Sorry if I was confusing

Thanks Dave for the info....

Dual rectifiers would be used to get more current handling capability and reduced voltage drop. 5U4's are pretty inefficient compared to 5AR4's... 50% more heater current, and 40V drop vs. 16 (at 200mA).

Show me a picture of butter and tell me not to mention toast.

(hat bump)

I wonder if that amp is socially broken..

I personally think this is a very cool product and a nice business decision for Fender regardless of the JB signature. Considering that Fender has largely been stuck in a rut of only a very small handful of historic models reissued since the late 80s, it's a great way for them to dip their toe into the pool and see if there's an appetite for something off the beaten path. Using JB as the distribution channel and with his name-power behind it, I'm sure they will be watching how fast the market absorbs this limited model at the premium price point.

If they aren't going to do any serious innovation, I'd love to see some high-quality, new production models come out of old amps. While I won't be buying a new one, I can't wait to see some of them hit the secondary market.

the shields around the input and output jacks seem like a good idea. But the tube rectifier is not. You get plenty of sag with a marshall style power supply. And a head and cab is preferable to a combo imho

The amp appears to be pretty much a stock 5F8A circuit. There are a few modern improvements such as diodes on the rectifier and flyback diodes on the output transformer primaries.
