Fender Hot Rod Deluxe/DeVille/Blues Deluxe rescue plan: HRD-to-ODS

Post by xtian »

UPDATED 19 March 2019
-----------------------------

The Fender Hot Rod models (Hot Rod Deluxe, Hot Rod DeVille, Blues Deluxe) all share the same PCB, and these PCBs are subject to early retirement due to heat damage and other common modes of failure (15v switching supply failure, broken input jack solder joints, failing PI plate resistors, ribbon cable failure, etc). Replacement PCBs are not available for love or money. So we (@xtian and @jazzguitargimp) have created a D-style drop-in PCB replacement for Fender's amps, based on @talbany 's Bluesmaster layout.

I have completed the first build, and pronounce the end product EXCELLENT!

Here is my list of mods:
  • Master Volume: Bluemaster MV is pre-OD, which is weird to me...I much prefer the MV to be post-OD like #183 for example. To this end, jumper VR5 CW to Wiper. Instead of taking P1 Send wire to Send jack, take wire to MV first, then Send jack (we are simply inserting the MV in series with the FX loop, just prior to the loop. Finally, move bright cap C33 to MV pot.
  • HRM PAB: We built a relay-switched, tone-stack-lift feature into the OD HRM, which we called HRM PAB. I found this to be one too many options, so I omitted this feature by jumpering R75, removed K4, and replaced D11 with a 10K resistor (preserves the load on the switching system--required!)
  • Bias voltage supply: If you are using the OEM Fender PT and bias winding, do not use Zener D15--just jumper that connection. The Zener is not required unless rectified bias voltage exceeds 75v.
  • PAB level adjustment mod: If the stock PAB boost is too much, replace R8 with a 100K trimmer pot. Now you can adjust the boost. Really great mod!

oh man! I may jump on that idea, I have a blues deluxe and although it's clean channel is 'fine' the drive sucks. I'd love to swap that board out and put something useful in it.

Looking forward to the updates!

This is great guys! I am excited to here how this sounds when its done. I noticed 4 relays on the board usually the ODS has 2 and the green connectors, are those for the ribbons? The Mallory style caps are a great way to make things work in a small space. The HRD also comes with the exact number of knobs needed, 8.
The ribbon idea is also nice in the fact that it eliminates the amount of soldering required.
Really like the orange colour! :D

Cheers

Yes, there are four relays! Blame Lou. Features that can be switched by relay: clean/OD, PAB (clean tone stack), mid boost, PAB (HRM tone stack).

The green connectors are kind of a proof of concept--if one was to produce multiple finished boards, this would allow a very quick and easy way to swap them out for testing. OTOH, you can omit the green terminals and solder wires directly to the board. I'm not using any ribbon cable, just hookup wire.

Thanks xtian for posting. Looks amazing . I like the way the green connectors work, looks easier than traditional hand wired!

The connectors seem to work OK, but long-term stability is a concern, especially given this is a combo amp. I'll put threadlock on these things. They certainly don't save any time. Soldering them would be just as quick as screwing. Only benefit is ease of disconnecting the wires for testing, swapping components, etc.

Xtian, looks very cool but where's the matching faceplate to replace the universally rusted chassis?

Screw terminals are pretty solid, and I have to believe quicker than soldering unless the flying leads are soldered from the top side. No reason you couldn’t preserve either option. I wouldn’t goop them up with thread lock.
