So many amps, so little time. I just reconnected with an old college bandmate who's looking for a 6G3 Brownface Deluxe. He likes his 5E3 which he's running with 5881 tubes and a 5U4GB rectifier tube, but "wants more headroom and a more stout tone". Being unable to elaborate more, the Brownface Deluxe seems more like an amp you would crank for ZZ Top rock tones, not for cleaner sounds, or am I wrong. Looks like a 4-in normal/bright setup with single tone controls, an LTPI and onboard tremolo. I wondered the following:
1) What deviations are usually recommended from stock on this circuit? PT grid stopper or screen resistors? SS rectifier?
2) What about a choke instead of the 1K 2W dropping resistor between nodes A and B?
3) Does the tremolo on this circuit sound good enough to use?
Thanks!
