Upgrading DSL40C transformers

Post by Bauzer »

Hi,

I'm new to this place. A very kind person directed me here as I was searching for answers to my DSL40CR mod. Essentially, I want to replace the OT, PT and possibly add a choke. So, I've been looking at Mercury Magnetics, Classic Tone and Hammond. I hope you guys can help me with the following:

1) Output Transformers: I am considering the age old Mercury Magnetics vs Classic Tone question. MM has a few to choose from here https://www.mercurymagnetics.com/?s=O50 ... pe=product but they are expensive and plastic. Classic Tone has a paper OT/PT/Choke bundle that's reasonably priced http://store.triodestore.com/50wplexibundle.html

2) Power Transformer: I'm considering, if I didn't get the Classic Tone Bundle, I might get a Hammond 290GX 50 watt 345-0-345 @150mA 6.3V@5A. But if I went with Classic Tone, could someone tell me what's the tonal difference between 40-18095 http://www.classictone.net/40-18095.pdf and 40-18023 http://www.classictone.net/40-18023.pdf

3) Choke: do I need one? If I did, I'll be looking at either one of these: 40-18058 http://www.classictone.net/40-18058.pdf or TRI-M100D (5Hy) Choke http://triodeelectronics.com/tri-m100d.html

Thanks in advance. I apologize for the barrage of questions for my first post.

What is your goal? Have you heard that the factory transformers are lacking? Do you have access to the schematic?

Moding a cheep amp for "better" parts as we offten see folks think is usually a big waist of money and time IMO.

Output transformers from different brands sound different but it doesnt mean the change in tone will be better or worse.. just different.
MM are overpriced and usualy sound the worst so I would avoid. No need to change the power. A choke will add weight and a lot of reports claim the amp becomes tighter in the bass. I dont think its nessiceray. I currently own the 40cr.

I would recomend spending that money on different speakers as you will have more tonal options that way.

I don't have the factory schematics but I think the PT and OT are Triad Magnetics.

Background.
I have gone through several amps including DSL40 (2017 model) and VoxAC15HW1. My favorite was Vox, Vox and Vox. But I bought this DSL40CR because it was light in weight, versatile and reasonable in size. The Vox was huge and was kind of a 1 trick phony! I also looked at other Marshall combos with 50w but the dials and settings were too complex. This DSL40CR is so simple to use. I don't have to redial, simply tap on the foot switch.

Mods/upgrade.
I have done a few things on this amp: Mullard EL34-XF2, I61 and I63, and NOS CV4004. I replaced the V-Type with Celestion Gold and it has broken in nicely. So, I'm now thinking, let's replace the OT and PT.

OK, so no choke.

Power transformer wont get you any thing in tone. Youll have to get all the specs correct fora direct replacement if you even attempt this. Definitely not worth the time or money.
