It's that way on the '68 Superleads too.

Were did you see the voltages for the Hendrix (old or new)? You know it from the PT model used? I bet new KT66s can handle 475 or so. If 525 then maybe not, but if you limit the screens enough... if you get 6 months, it's the price of rock&roll. Question about new tubes of all stripes is what do they sound like pushed hard? As good as old tubes? Bet that's the real issue. I've no idea, I have no real hot amps and no new tubes.

the shuguangs handle 530v usually if you use 1k screen grid resistors. the new gold lions handle almost the same, although they draw more screen current (the shuguangs draw way less than original uk kt66s) and may need bigger screen grid resistors

It's in the quote from Dickinson in my first post. He says 575v. However, he also states that the only change made was the 500pf, when in fact if you look at both the original and the Marshall replica the slope resistor has been changed from the original value of 56k to the more modern value of 33k.

Legend has it that it was Hendrix that got Marshall to move to 33k.

Pure hearsay, but one company that did some work for Hendrix, said the he supposedly preferred higher voltage Marshalls. Of course they also claimed they replaced all of his el34's with 6550s.

There's a lot of misinformation out there. As Paul Kantner said, "Anyone who remembers the sixties probably wasn't there."

original schematics (2 different ones) show 560v on the plates and 559v on the screens. 575v on the dickinson amp is perfectly possible. Personally, I like between 510 and 535v with the new genalex/gold lions from russia.

Who is Paul Kantner?

Thanks for the photos & layout. Very nice. Tempting to build one of these.

Of course, anyone wanting to perfectly duplicate that magical night in Monterey will need to also build a Dual Showman, which was used in parallel with the Marshall.

As well as model that perfect reverberation of the arena. Start with 300 ms.

And you need to be able to chew gum, talk to the audience, and play amazing guitar all at the same time.

And it's okay if you miss a verse.

I have often wondered about the BOG show. His tone is darker.

It's been a while since I listened to the BOG recordings--some of my favorite, btw--but from what I recall, he had the Univibe on for most if not all of the performance. The Univibe does make the sound darker and warmer and is, in my opinion, one of the keys to the BOG sound.
What?

lots of speculation about the BOG amps. Pics from that era suggests 69ish superleads but some people nevertheless believe he was using JTMs or superbasses. there is also disagreement over power tubes, whether he was using 6550s, el34s or kt66s

I had a 69 100watt back in the day. There was 560volts on the plates with that amp. because it was a 69 it came with mullard EL34's not KT66's. I put a clean sine wave through (as clean as tube amps get) no Clipping and got a clean 160 Watts RMS out of that amp on a resistive 8 ohm load. Hell of an amp.

Thanks Lefty for the Pics. And the video. Such a great performance in history.

Wasnt he using a silicon fuzz by then also?

Yeah, he probably was. Typically the silicon ones are brighter and buzzier, so maybe he backed off the treble on the amp to compensate.

And like Jana said, the Univibe had an effect. Those weren't true bypass, so it would have affected his signal even if it wasn't on.
