6550s are a bad choice. take a look at the screens voltage (620 vs. 440)

True enough! And yet...

many others have reported problems with 6550s in a (stock) major.

Does anyone have info of the SRV Marshall major was stock or modded? There is a lot of speculation about what may have changed on his Vibroverb but people often overlooked the Major which was indeed a great part os his tone. Hence so little information seem to be available relating to the Major

Also If I was to build a clone of this amp, should I go for 100watt or 200watts? Any suggestion on how to add a reverb to the chain? Maybe something lile the Fender Vibro King which is right after the input and ran by a 6V6? Or something loke a SSS with a 3 tube reverb

With the cost of the iron to do 200watts RMS it cheaper just to double the speakers used to get the sound pressure your looking for!

yes. dont. lol

i have a couple majors will get pics when I am close to them.

umm majors are not very marshally in general. your ear drums tickle 12db before breakup and your eyes bleed just a little at drive. there is not a full drive. its insane anyhow heh

I am curious if anyone are able to suggest how to build a Marshall Major circuit but using 12ax7 and 4x 6L6 instead?

Do you have something against the 12AU7? Replacing KT88 with 6L6 would be easy. Just replace the OT with a 100W unit and reduce the size of the PT accordingly.

Got it! Thanks for the tip

The reason for 12AX7 is that I have lots of nice NOS waiting to be used and I do not have any other like 12AU7 etc,

If you use a 12AX7 instead of the AU you'll have to change a bunch of resistors in that spot to make it work properly, as was discussed earlier in this thread. I'd suggest saving your nice 12ax7s for other things and getting some good NOS AU's. They're not nearly as expensive as NOS 12ax7's. Plus it will sound closer to a real major. Also KT66's might not be a bad choice either.

You could also do what FusionBear (I think) did and build half a Major with 2x kt88's instead of four.

Don't add a pan type reverb as you will never get the pan far enough away from that 20 plus pound PT to not pick up 60 HZ hum, install a SS one if you must have Verb!
