Is this a Marshall Major?

Post by TonewolfAmps »

A buddy of mine found this amp for sale for dirt cheap and we're trying to figure out if it's a real Marshall Major. The guy he is talking to buys abandoned storage units and this amp and another Major PA (with 8 inputs) was in it. The major PA is definitely real but we're not sure on this one.

This is a Major output transformer, they have no end Bells and neither do the power transformers.

The secondary side on these have 10 wires.

The OT tip's the scale at 16 lbs.

Also 6550s can not be used in a Major because they have 620 volts on the plates and the screens, and the screens in 6550s are rated for 400 to 440 volts max, so the Majors must run KT88s or some of the new bigger ones.

The PI tube in Majors is a 12AU7, if you put in a 12AX7 the amp will only output 150 watts of RMS power or so, and this is the same deal with the Hiwatt 200s also by the way!

The fuse ratings on that chassis do look correct!

I wonder why the chassis is punched for 6x 8pin sockets? Also did they sell the major in the US or is this a 220v amp?

They made slave amps that where well over 200 watts.

Here's a '72. More photos here: https://reverb.com/item/4939472-1972-ma ... kt88-tubes Earlier ones had the small rectifier board mounted on the top of the chassis. Transformers with end bells were common.

I have only worked on 3 of these Back breakers and I think all of them where no younger then 1970.
